Psalms 97:9 “For You are the Lord Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.”

At church service a few weeks ago we sang this classic praise song, I Exalt Thee. The following are the lyrics:

"For Thou, O Lord, art high above all the earth
Thou art exalted far above all gods
For Thou, O Lord, art high above all the earth

Thou art exalted far above all gods
I exalt Thee, I exalt Thee
I exalt Thee, O Lord
I exalt Thee, I exalt Thee
I exalt Thee, O Lord..."

For years when I hear this song I am reminded of a time when my nephew was young he turned to his mom after the entire church sang this song in praise with hands lifted and simply asked, “mom, why do they hate Psalty?” See he thought that instead of singing I Exalt Thee, the church sang, I Hate Psalty (I should explain that in the late 80”s and early 90’s Psalty was a popular Cartoon Bible Character, and loved by my nephew).

With this story in mind, I often think how many times we are misunderstood or misquoted, and how often do we misunderstand others? We often find ourselves upset about something we hear only to find out it was a misunderstanding. We can all recall a situation where we affected someone or we got our feelings hurt only to later realize that it was just a lack of communication and understanding.

Psalms 97 gives us a clear picture of God’s glory and righteousness, reminding us over and over of His glory and power. When I am feeling overwhelmed I can call out to God and lay my burdens at His feet. If we go back to this verse or song He will remind us that if we simply “exalt” God, our Lord and Savior high above all, we can remove all misunderstandings and trust in Him.

My prayer for this week:

Lord God, thank You for all You have done in my life. You are the God most high and above all that I possess and all that I am. I ask that you continue to guide my life and help me through the good and the rough times this week. I lift You high above all earthly possessions and worries and exalt You in every thought and action. In your son Jesus’ name Amen!
