The Right Kind of Fear
Anonymous - March 10, 2017

Bonnie and I have been coming to PCC for a number of months now. The initial reason was location; it's much, much closer to home. We had no idea there was a closer CC. Our friends, Jim and Charlene Reeger told us about it. We've found it to be a very loving and spirit filled body and we're very happy to call it our home. One of the biggest changes for us was that we were just middle aged in the last church and now feel - OLD. But we really enjoy watching all the children here. At running the risk of increasing Tim's hat size, we are blessed by the teaching here and it makes me feel guilty for not feeling passionate enough.

The last couple Sundays Tim has been talking about fear among other things. He pointed out what 1 John 4:18 says: "Love casts out fear". We have nothing to fear in this world as long as we are abiding in Jesus. But fear does play an important roll in the life of the believer. Proverbs 9:10 states that, “ the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". Proverbs 8:13 says, "fear of the Lord is to hate evil". In Philippians 2:12 Paul tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. That verse used to bother me, but I think it just means that we are to take it seriously because this is real. We're not to fear that the Lord is going to clobber us but fear that we are not pleasing Him. It’s almost like the peer pressure a kid feels at school, wanting to look just right and do and say the right things; likewise we want to please Him in what we think, say and do.

So I think the main thing the believer needs to fear is himself/herself. Our sinful nature can raise its ugly head at the most inopportune time. Won't it be glorious when we get to rid ourselves of it! But meanwhile we're stuck with it. Paul stated he had to die daily. Peter said to gird up the loins of your mind in 1 Peter 1:13. The mind can be a minefield! I like Paul's advice to meditate on worthy things in Philippians 4:8 and to be filled with the Spirit so you won't fulfill the lusts of the flesh in Galatians 5:16. And when we do blow it, you know you will (I know I will), "His mercies are new every morning" Lamentations 3:23. So brothers and sisters put on the full armor of God, we are at war, sometimes against ourselves. Be a soldier of God, for there's no conscientious objectors in this war.
